Oprahmartha on the line
So, I’m cleaning my room and figured I post some wall hangings here that I had up, but that I don’t intend to leave up as I think I’ve gotten, for now, what I’m going to get out of them.
They were cut outs from an advertisement/catalog from Veer.com. The first one is entitled Oprahmartha and I just was haunted by the description of it for such a long time:
Can Nirvana be reached by following television and magazine gurus? It is not for us to judge. The Oprahmartha look presents a world where harsh shadows are banished, along with last year’s china patterns. Where you can become a yogi not merely of your body, but of your home.
Then, there was also a little composite advert on another page with a theme/title of “on the line - new metaphors for communication”. The images included in that one were:
That is all in terms of stuff from there that I had up on my wall. Most of it I didn’t use any adhesive - the mirror that came with the room is affixed tightly enough that by sliding paper between the mirror and the wall, the paper is held in place. I did have to use a little tape for use with Oprahmartha.
I’m posting this here in this category because I think there’s something deep that can be read out of the Oprahmartha description, but I’m not totally certain what it is, but I think it has something to do with the impact/confluence/convergence of technology, society, and the individual.
Hmmm….achieving Nirvana in your home as well as soul? It is a very odd concept I think….their spin on it anyways. (Oprah and Martha) I’ve always thought that your home should always reflect your personality and lifestyle. I think the Oprahmartha approach is simply to get people to buy a bunch of stuff thinking that it’ll help them feel better about their world. It’s sounds like a misdirection to me. Nirvana doesn’t come through the home, but through ourselves….our homes are simply a reflection of ourselves not our influence. Though I admit that certain amenities do help. ;) i.e. pretty things, pillows, pictures, and hot tubs heh heh….they can relax the eye and the self, but in the end it’s still the mind that is most important. I think I agree that the Oprahmartha outlook is a bit….disturbing. Not to mention suspiciously commercial. “Buy these things…they’ll save your soul.” *shivers*
