24.001: My connection makes me not connected

me:

I thrive on the net. I am connected to data. It is online. I can access it whenever. I have outsourced my memory to the net, and through the linkages, I am a thousand times more informationally powerful and efficient than I would have been with person-to-person and one-to-one communication.

net:

Yes, you have become part of me, and I you, and we are at peace with that.

me:

Yes, we are, and there is no turning back, I know. My always-on connection is at the heart of how I conceive of myself with respect to others. I can do so much more by exploiting the technology around me to the fullest.

me:

And yet, I know something is missing. Others do not share the same consciousness as I. They do not understand the withdrawal. They do not understand that becoming like a blogger is almost like becoming a vampire - there is no way back once the technology is in one’s blood.

me:

Is this what it means to be a cyborg?

Donna Haraway:

A cyborg is a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of social reality as well as a creature of fiction.

me:

I guess I am a cyborg.
